A teenager has been shot and killed in the US while getting into an Uber after a night out with friends, his family and police said.

Camden Siegal, 17, was caught in ‘crossfire’ during a shooting in Connecticut, according to his family. As per local media WFSB-TV, police were patrolling the area at 1.47am on Sunday when they heard the gunshots.

The teen was found unconscious, and despite being rushed to hospital, he died from his injuries. A 20-year-old man was also injured in the shooting but survived and is now in stable condition. His family said in a statement: “Camden was the sweetest soul who moved through life with kindness and intention.

“He loved all animals, but mostly his four dogs and cat. He had the greatest group of friends. His friendships were built on loyalty, trust and countless unforgettable memories.

“Camden shared a special relationship with his brother Hayden. From early childhood through young adulthood, Camden and Hayden shared a love of friends, sports, hijinks, practical jokes and adventure, but most of all a strong affection for each other.”

Siegal is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Fisher, and his brother, Hayden, as well as his aunt, two uncles and three cousins.

One witness, Elijah Ahmed, was working security at the PeoplesBank Arena, where the Hartford Wolf Pack, a professional hockey team, had played hours earlier. He said: “I heard shots, I was inside the office. I heard shots, then people screaming.”

Police have not named a suspect yet, but are ‘actively following all leads.’

Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam, a Democrat, said in response to the incident: “Our young people and families deserve a city where they feel safe and protected from reckless and dangerous behavior that has no place in our community.

Arulampalam continued: “Nightclubs and nightlife establishments have a fundamental responsibility to maintain safe environments and will not be permitted to overlook neighborhood security.”
