Budget-friendly retailer Matalan has confirmed it will be shutting its Colne, Lancashire store on March 7, with 50% discounts launched across all products as staff are offered redeployment
A cost-effective retailer has announced it will be closing another outlet. Matalan, a UK-based fashion and homeware retailer established in 1985, is set to close its store in Colne, Lancashire, next week.
Shoppers have been informed they can visit the North Valley Retail Park store in Colne until March 7, after which it will permanently shut down.
The retailer hasn’t given a reason for the closure but has introduced 50% discounts across its product range.
A spokesperson for Matalan stated: “Our priority now is to support our colleagues. We are working closely with all those affected and, where possible, exploring alternative positions.
“We have thoroughly enjoyed serving customers at the retail park and hope they will continue to shop with us at our nearby Accrington or Blackburn stores.”

The Colne store isn’t the only one impacted, as Matalan also recently revealed the closure of its Carlisle branch on 7 March. The company explained that the Carlisle megastore was shut to facilitate a significant redevelopment project, reports the Express.
The retail park housing the store will be converted into a new southern entrance for Carlisle station, as part of the Carlisle Station Gateway redevelopment scheme, which aims to transform Carlisle Station into a “welcoming gateway to the city”.
In the meantime, staff at the Leeds Matalan store were reassigned after it permanently closed on February 24.
Despite the shutdowns, the Daily Express previously reported that Matalan is planning to invest this year. In December, the retailer announced it would revamp 40 stores in 2026, 10 more than initially planned, following a sales boost from its 2025 refurbishment programme.
Last year, it carried out 30 scheduled makeovers as part of a £25 million investment in its physical retail estate, and Matalan reported that the revamped sites were outperforming the broader retail network by 14% in sales.
Matalan was established in 1985 by British entrepreneur John Hargreaves, who christened the company by merging the names of his two sons, Matt and Alan.
After four decades in operation, the retailer now runs over 200 stores across the UK, complemented by an omnichannel e-commerce platform.
