A former cellmate claims Ghislaine Maxwell had poor hygiene behind bars at FCI Tallahassee, with fellow inmates complaining she ‘stank of body odour’ and showered rarely
A woman who was jailed with the infamous British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell has claimed that her personal hygiene was so poor in prison that fellow inmates complained she “stank of body odour”. Offering a glimpse into life behind bars, the former cellmate alleges that the 64-year-old had “horrible personal hygiene” and would only bathe once or twice a week.
In 2022, the socialite was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty by a federal jury on five charges, including sex trafficking. She was convicted for recruiting and grooming four girls between 1994 and 2004 for sexual encounters with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Epstein, who was her boyfriend at the time, died in prison in 2019 whilst awaiting his own sex trafficking trial. From July 2022 until summer 2025, Maxwell was held at FCI Tallahassee in Florida.
During her stint in Tallahassee, Maxwell was in close quarters with an inmate who told TMZ that most prisoners avoided Maxwell, dubbing her a “Chomo”, prison jargon for child molester. The source added that Maxwell spent most of her time exercising, which exacerbated her issue with body odour.
The former prisoner revealed she was unaware of any efforts to attack Maxwell at the low-security facility, noting that fellow inmates kept their distance due to fears of being sent to “the hole.”
She added: “It’s just not worth it.”
She characterised “the hole” as an isolated wing where prisoners remain confined to their cells continuously and receive cold meals in extremely harsh conditions.
Maxwell was relocated from the Florida facility in August and transferred to Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas.
The minimum-security Federal Prison Camp (FPC) Bryan in Texas is an establishment frequently utilised for white-collar offenders, sparking outrage and accusations of favourable treatment.
In a statement, the family of the late Virginia Giuffre – one of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims – voiced their “horror and disgust” at what they termed the “preferential treatment” afforded to Ghislaine Maxwell.
They additionally denounced the transfer as having occurred “without any notification to Maxwell’s victims”.
