Manchester United suffered an injury blow as Luke Shaw limped off holding his foot during the first half of their clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday
Luke Shaw limped off during the opening period of Manchester United’s encounter with Crystal Palace on Sunday to present Michael Carrick with a potential fitness concern.
Shaw has endured a dreadful injury history since his switch to Old Trafford in 2014 but has succeeded in remaining fit throughout this campaign.
The left-back appeared to be clutching his foot as he received attention from a medical staff member. Shaw had previously been caught on the foot by Palace full-back Daniel Munoz but it remains unclear whether that was the incident which resulted in his withdrawal.
Shaw was making his 27th appearance of the season for United. The England international was substituted by Noussair Mazraoui with United 1-0 up courtesy of Maxence Lacroix’s early header.
Leny Yoro bore much of the responsibility for the visitors’ opener as he lost his marker and allowed Lacroix a free header to nod home.
Michael Carrick will offer an update on Shaw’s fitness problem during his post-match media briefing, with the extent of the issue so far unknown. Shaw was spotted shaking his head as he departed the pitch.
An absence of European football and disappointing showings in both domestic cup tournaments means United’s fixture list is far less congested than usual.
Wednesday’s match against Newcastle is followed by an 11-day break before United welcome Aston Villa and so Carrick will be hoping the prolonged gap between fixtures gives Shaw sufficient time to recover and avoid missing numerous matches.
It could also prove to be a blow for Shaw’s World Cup hopes with the final international break before the summer’s tournament coming at the end of this month.
