Veteran manager Neil Warnock is set to return to the dugout once again, taking the helm at National League South team Torquay United for their match against Farnborough. This will mark Warnock’s first managerial role in nearly two years.

The 77-year-old announced his retirement from football management in April 2024, after a temporary stint leading Scottish club Aberdeen. However, he has been serving as an advisor to Torquay for the past two years.

The team suffered a crushing 5-0 home defeat to Chelmsford City on Saturday, resulting in the dismissal of manager Paul Wotton. A statement issued by the club on Sunday stated: “Torquay United Football Club can confirm that it has today parted company with first team manager Paul Wotton.

“We are very grateful to Paul for his hard work, professionalism, and commitment during his time at the club. We thank Paul for his contribution, both on and off the pitch.

“Torquay United wish Paul every success in his future endeavours. Neil Warnock will take the team for Tuesday night’s fixture with Farnborough, and an update on interim arrangements will be communicated in due course.”

Warnock embarked on his managerial career with Gainsborough in 1980, making Torquay the 17th club he has managed over the span of 46 years. During this period, he has overseen a total of 1,060 matches, securing 392 victories, drawing 293 and losing 375 games.

Reflecting on his accomplishments back in August last year, he told The Guardian: “I’ve had eight promotions and if I went back to these clubs tomorrow, I’d get a great reception.

“I got Cardiff in the Premier League. Look where they are now. To get Notts County in the top flight?

“If I had a fashionable name or I were a fashionable manager, I think I’d have got more acknowledgment. But they gave me an award this year at the Football League, for my contribution to the EFL.”

Torquay currently find themselves in fourth position in the National League South, though they have failed to secure victory in their previous five matches, prompting the managerial switch.

Whilst Warnock will oversee Tuesday evening’s fixture, it seems this is merely a temporary arrangement as they begin their hunt for a permanent successor.
