Liverpool had the chance to definitively turn a proverbial corner on Tuesday evening.
In a season that Aren Slot & Co will be hoping they can banish from their memories in the very near future, the Reds had the chance to break the top four. Slot’s faltering side played 24 hours ahead of their rivals – the golden opportunity to steal a march.
And their task, on paper, was relevantly straight forward: beat lowly Wolves. However, straightforward hasn’t really been Liverpool’s forte this season – and Slot has been left with question marks about his team and style of play.

It looked like it was the ultimate smash and grab from Wolves, one long ball and a knockdown allowed Rodrigo Gomes to dink the ball over Alisson Becker.
Jose Sa’s magnificent save a couple of minutes later looked like it was Wolves’ night – but a woeful mistake allowed Mohamed Salah to be Liverpool’s knight in shining armour one more time.
The reality is it should have never got the point Liverpool needed their hero to save them. However, the game opened up and in the 93rd minute Andre’s deflected shot sailed past Alisson to send Molineux into dreamland.

Slot got his tactics all wrong. Liverpool again were passive, a side which once prided themselves on their energy look void of it – with the exception of Rio Ngumoha, who looked every bit the player he promised to be in the summer.
The transition into midfield is non-existant, and the Reds are worryingly open to counter attacks – which was even more evident as Slot made attacking changes and Liverpool tried to chase the game.
It’s hard to see how Slot can fix this problem before the end of the season.

Slot had a unique chance to immediately bounce back from Tuesday’s disappointment as the Reds are back in action on Friday against Wolves.
However, by the time Slot’s side take the pitch, their Champions League dreams might be further away than they were on Tuesday morning.
