Players were forced to evacuate at the Fujairah Open ATP Challenger Tour match after a drone was intercepted near the UAE venue
Players were compelled to abandon the court at the Fujairah Open in the United Arab Emirates due to the ongoing conflict. The UAE is among the nations currently under attack by Iran following US-Israeli airstrikes on the Middle Eastern country over the weekend.
The strikes, authorised by Donald Trump, resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and plunged the region into warfare. Airbases in Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital, were severely impacted by Iranian retaliatory strikes, whilst tourist attractions in nearby Dubai were also targeted.
The attacks have persisted into the new week, with an ATP Challenger Tour match between Daniil Ostapenkov and Matsuoka Hayato interrupted by a nearby incident. Players were observed fleeing the court in panic after an alarm was triggered at the Tennis Country Club Fujairah.
It turns out that the alarm was set off after a drone was intercepted near the Port of Fujairah, with debris igniting a fire in an oil industry area.
The Fujairah Media Office commented on the incident, stating: “Relevant authorities in the Emirate of Fujairah responded to a fire that broke out this morning in the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone (FOIZ), resulting from falling debris following the successful interception of a drone by air defense systems.
“No injuries were reported, the fire was brought under control, and normal operations in the area have resumed.”
This follows the Dubai Tennis Championships wrapping up on Saturday, and whilst the tournament wasn’t directly affected by strikes, some players taking part at the ATP 500 event have been caught up in the mayhem.

They include the men’s singles champion, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, who have been stranded in the UAE after flights departing the country were cancelled.
Indian Wells is due to commence this week, with Medvedev, Rublev, and all of the other tennis stars’ participation now in doubt.
Spanish news outlet Marca are reporting that the Russian pair are planning to travel to Oman by car, given that it’s one of the Middle Eastern countries thought to be at lowest risk.
It’s suggested from there, they’ll depart via private jet to either Turkey or Armenia, before making their way over to California for Indian Wells.
But with their opening fixtures rapidly approaching, time is certainly running out for the marooned players.
