Birmingham: Dramatic scenes as armed police respond to stabbing close to a school

A man who tragically lost his life after being fatally stabbed in the street has been named. Ali Alshmari, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene following a knife attack on Bridge Road, Alum Rock yesterday, Tuesday, March 3.

A 32-year-old man was taken into custody in relation to the stabbing and remained in police custody this morning, March 4. A woman in her 50s, who sustained hand injuries during the incident, was later released from hospital.

A knife thought to have been used in the assault was recovered and is currently under examination, reports Birmingham Live. Det Supt James Munro, of West Midlands Police, said: “This is a tragic and violent attack which has cost the life of Mr Alshmari, and left a woman injured.

“We are doing everything we can to establish exactly what happened and why, and the public’s response has been fantastic.

“We’ve had CCTV, dashcam and mobile footage shared with us, which has been very helpful for the investigation, and I’d urge anyone who’s not yet been in touch with us to do so as soon as possible.

“We understand how deeply distressing and concerning this incident is and we will have extra officers in the area to offer reassurance to the community.”

The force confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terror-related.

A spokesperson for the force added: “We know that this happened close to a school, and we are meeting with members of the local community today to discuss their concerns and offer them reassurance.”

Fresh footage today revealed several officers continuing their investigations at the location. A blue evidence tent stayed in position.

Motorists were observed being redirected away from the vicinity.
