Facebook appears to be suffering a widespread outage, with thousands of users reporting they cannot log in or access the social media platform.

Monitoring service DownDetector reveals a dramatic spike in problem reports across both the UK and the US, starting at approximately 9.40 pm last night. Users have highlighted difficulties including login failures, pages refusing to load and the app declining to refresh.

By 9.47 pm, over 1,600 reports had been recorded in the UK alone, indicating the disruption is impacting a substantial number of people with the issue continuing this morning. The magnitude of the surge suggests the problem isn’t confined to individual cases, though it remains uncertain what has triggered the outage or its expected duration, reports the Daily Record.

Thousands of users have reported encountering an error message when trying to access Facebook. The warning error message states: “Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.”

Multiple Facebook users have flocked to alternative social media platforms to voice their frustration with the site being offline. Turning to X, formerly known as Twitter, one user posted: “Facebook down?” which attracted numerous replies from other users confirming they are also experiencing difficulties.

Another user voiced their worries about the platform potentially remaining offline, writing: “#Facebook is currently down. I thought I got another ban. I still miss my original account from college that was taken down alongside my Instagram and Threads at the exact same time. Lost hundreds of friends and 20 years worth of pictures..”

Data from DownDetector reveals that the majority of Facebook complaints centre on website access issues. Approximately 59 per cent of users highlighted troubles reaching the platform through desktop browsers, whilst 20 per cent encountered login difficulties and 14 per cent experienced problems with their feed and timeline.

User feedback on DownDetector indicates the disruption has been sporadic, with the social network functioning momentarily before crashing once more. One person commented: “Down. worked briefly for a bit and then back down again.”

Another added: “Site unavailable, then okay, then unavailable, then okay, then unavailable …… lol.”

Multiple users suggested the technical difficulties appear to be primarily impacting the desktop version, with several stating Facebook operates ‘fine’ on their mobile devices.

Across the pond in the United States, nearly 10,000 users have flagged access problems, with complaints hitting 9,780 at approximately 10pm GMT. One disgruntled user remarked: “Before I got the ‘account temporarily unavailable due to a site issue’ message I am getting now, it wasn’t allowing me to read or comment on anything and only load a couple posts in my feed at a time before ‘please try again’. This has been going on for the past hour.”
