The family of a man fighting for his life in Thailand following a horrific scooter accident have released a devastating update. Zak Forsyth, 21, from Huyton, sustained severe injuries last month when his scooter smashed into a car.

He endured catastrophic and life-threatening trauma and has been undergoing treatment in Thailand since, with his loved ones confronting spiralling medical costs as he lacked travel insurance.

In earlier reports, Zak’s girlfriend, Amy Elkin, 21, had described his recovery as “remarkable”, detailing how medication had successfully reduced brain swelling and transformed dangerous blood clots into fluid.

Zak had undergone extensive facial reconstruction surgery following multiple fractures to his face, with metal plates fitted and his jaw secured with wires. He also received a tracheotomy and was breathing on his own after initially requiring ventilator support.

Nevertheless, in a recent statement posted on the family’s fundraising page, Amy disclosed that Zak’s condition has now deteriorated dramatically, reports the Liverpool Echo.

She explained: “Unfortunately, Zak’s condition has not improved. Last night he took a significant turn and began displaying very aggressive behaviour. His mental state is currently in a critical condition.

“Whilst we initially hoped to admit him to a private hospital, the costs are simply beyond what we can afford.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. Our priority is ensuring Zak’s safety and getting him stabilised with the right medical support.

“We are taking this step because his health and wellbeing must come first. We are so grateful for the continued support, prayers and donations. Every contribution is helping us cover medical bills and ensure Zak receives the care he urgently requires.”

Zak remains in intensive care following the crash. Amy previously said the family were “struggling” with mounting medical costs, adding: “We continue to need as much support as possible to help Zak regain strength before we can bring him home to Liverpool.

“We would be extremely grateful if people could continue sharing the JustGiving page, as we do not know what tomorrow may bring.

“If Zak’s condition worsens and surgery becomes necessary, the hospital will demand immediate payment before proceeding. This has been one of the most distressing experiences for our family, with staff standing in his ICU room with a card machine.”
