‘While opposition parties seek to undermine Britain on the world stage, my Labour government is focused on protecting people at home’, the PM writes for The Sunday Mirror
The conflict in Iran and the Middle East is worrying for families here in Britain.
People are understandably asking what it means for their bills, their communities – and our national security. My focus throughout has been simple – calm and level-headed leadership in the national interest.
At moments like this, the country needs seriousness, not political games. While opposition parties seek to undermine Britain on the world stage, my Labour government is focused on protecting British people at home and abroad.

The world is uncertain. But the steps we have taken since day one of this government mean our country is better placed to navigate it. When it comes to our armed forces, the UK defence budget is already rising to record levels, with the largest sustained increase in spending since the Cold War.
On the economy, we have turned our backs on the failed ideas of the past, including austerity. Instead, we are supporting workers with better employment rights, and strengthening our energy security by investing in clean power. Decisions we have taken mean that interest rates have been cut six times, bringing mortgages costs down for millions.
And where everyday costs continue to bite, we are stepping in. Helping with the cost of childcare and energy bills. Freezing prescription charges and rail fares. Raising the minimum wage. No matter the headwinds, supporting working people and their families will always be at the forefront of my mind.
I know many will still be worried about the impact of this war on the cost of living. But they can be reassured they have a Labour government on their side, focused on protecting their families and acting in the national interest.
