NEED TO KNOW: UK earthquake hotspots revealed as 2.8 magnitude tremor rocks Scotland

  • A 2.8 magnitude earthquake struck Pubil, Perth and Kinross on Monday evening, causing houses to shake and leaving locals reporting “heavy rumbling as if a big truck was going past”.
  • The tremor hit at 7.25pm at a depth of 3km and was felt across several areas including Pitlochry, Kinloch Rannoch and Aberfeldy. Residents described feeling “a deep rumbling sound” and windows shaking during the seismic event.
  • The UK has experienced hundreds of earthquakes in 2025, with the trend continuing into 2026. A new 10-day map from the British Geological Society reveals seismic activity across the entire country.
  • Lancashire has emerged as the main earthquake hotspot, with parts of Yorkshire also showing increased activity. Just last week, four earthquakes struck Silverdale, Lancashire, with three occurring on February 28 alone.
  • The Lancashire quakes measured between 0.5 and 1.1 on the Richter Scale, with the epicentre located at a caravan park off Morecambe Bay. Despite the tremors, no damage has been reported in any of the affected areas.
  • Roger Musson, former Head of Seismic Hazard at the British Geological Society, explained: “There is a simple rule of thumb – for every decrease of one unit of magnitude, one expects a tenfold increase of number.”
