Iran’s state media released a statement reportedly written by Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Thursday, warning that Tehran will avenge the blood of its martyrs in a defiant first public address.
Khamenei – who has not been seen in public his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on 28 February – said this was especially true of the victims at an elementary school in Minab, 175 people, mostly children were killed, according to authorities.
In the message read by a state broadcaster, the 56-year-old leader said all US bases in the region should be closed, threatening future attacks. He claimed Iran still has a policy of “friendship” with its neighbours, despite continued strikes in the region.
Khamenei signalled he would continue the Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a tool of leverage with which to pressure the United States.
The new supreme leader is reported to have sustained injuries in US-Israeli strikes, but there have been conflicting reports about their severity.
It came as the International Energy Agency warned that the world is now facing the worst oil supply disruption in history, with oil prices surging past $100 per barrel again after more fuel tankers were struck in the Gulf this morning.
Meanwhile, Israel said it would be expanding operations in Lebanon and “take” territory due to what it said were threats by Hezbollah.

Aircraft roared above Lebanon’s capital and fiery explosions lit up the sky overnight, with Israel saying in it struck nearly a dozen locations in the southern suburbs in half an hour alone.
At least eight people were killed in a separate salvo along the capital’s iconic waterfront, where displaced families forced to flee their homes were sleeping rough.

Khamenei statement threatens revenge after losing family members
In a statement read by a state broadcaster, and reportedly by Mojtaba Khamenei, the leader called for unity among Iranians from “all walks of life” and threatened revenge for war casualties, relating his own experience after his father was killed on the first day of the war.
“This is something that I share with the people who have lost their ones because I lost my father, I lost my wife. My sister lost her child as well as the husband who has been martyred,” he said.
“But what it makes it easier for us to endure all these plights is to trust the grace of God and to know that patience is going to resolve it. I assure everyone that we will not ignoring the fact that we are going to revenge our martyrs.”
Millions displaced inside Iran, says UN
The United Nations Refugee Agency has said that up to 3.2 million people have been displaced inside Iran since the outbreak of war on 28 February.
Humanitarian groups also warn that up to one million people have been displaced in Lebanon.
