The discount retailer will shut stores in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Easter Sunday, but Scottish branches remain open as usual.
B&M has revealed it will shut hundreds of its stores across England, Wales and Northern Ireland for one day next month. The bargain retailer will close its doors for 24 hours on April 5, 2026, to mark Easter Sunday, providing staff with a deserved break.
All Scottish branches will remain open as usual. A B&M spokesman informed the Mirror: “England, Wales, and Northern Ireland stores will be closed on easter Sunday. Stores in Scotland will be trading as normal and operating their usual hours.”
Easter Sunday marks the only shutdown day for the chain. On Good Friday, 3 April, and Easter Monday, 6 April, shops will keep their regular opening schedules.
Retailers often modify their opening hours or close completely during bank holidays. According to existing rules, stores in England and Wales larger than 280 square metres must stay shut on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.
Keep in mind that B&M’s opening times might vary across different locations during the extended weekend break. It’s worth confirming in advance to prevent any letdown, reports the Liverpool Echo.
You can check the opening hours for your nearest B&M outlet via the store finder tool at bmstores.co.uk/stores. The B&M smartphone app also features a branch locator function. B&M was founded in 1978 and describes itself as “one of the leading variety retailers in the UK”.
According to its website: “From its first store in Blackpool, Lancashire, BandM has grown to over 700+ stores and employs over 35,000+ staff. BandM believes in selling top branded products at sensational prices. We attract over four million happy customers through our doors a week.”
Why do retailers shut on Easter Sunday?
Across England and Wales, laws require any shop larger than 280 square metres to stay shut on Easter Sunday. This is part of the Sunday Trading Act 1994, which limits opening times for bigger retail outlets on Sundays.
Smaller shops under 280 square metres aren’t subject to this rule, although many choose to close anyway, giving staff a much-needed rest. The same rules apply to Christmas Day trading.
In Scotland, though, no similar restrictions apply to holiday opening hours.
How many additional UK bank holidays remain in 2026?
From March 12, 2026, seven bank holidays are left in England and Wales for the rest of the year. After New Year’s Day, Good Friday on April 3 represents the following public holiday, with further dates occurring in April, May, August and December.
