A drunk bloke who released a group of lions from a cage while at a zoo was unsurprisingly badly mauled after the big cats turned on their liberator.

The man, described as being in his 40s, jumped a fence at a Mexico zoo on Monday in order to release the beasts, all of whom immediately attacked him.

Sadly, the freed lions also attacked a dog that happened to be there, killing it.

Before launching the daring big cat escape, the fella is believed to have videoed the lions roaring and walking about their cage, before deciding to jump the fence and free them.

Unsurprisingly, the escape caused something of a panic, and keepers working at the zoo turned up and raised the alert.

The man, who was pictured wearing a torn black sweatshirt and ripped blue jeans after the incident presumably because of the mauling, was taken to hospital following the attack.

He is believed to have suffered catastrophic wounds to his face and arms.

None of the lions suffered any injuries, and all big cats have been returned to their cages, according to reports.

The bizarre incident happened at Los Pinos Reserve, San Pedro Cholula, Mexico, on Monday.

The attack is not the first time Mexico has been rocked by the risk of dangerous animal escape.

Last year, hundreds of animals including big cats escaped from a sanctuary in Sinaloa after the area was hit by violent conflict waged by two rival cartels.

The sanctuary, which housed several animals that previously belonged to cartel bosses, was hit by a series of violent attacks and a blockade of supplies.

Fearing the possibility of the sanctuary getting out of control, or cartel bosses using further violence in order to get back their exotic pets, all 700 creatures, including cheetahs and tigers, were moved to a different state.

Mexico has long had a problem with abandoned exotic pets, which became fashionable amongst cartel bosses in the 1980s, but were often released.
