Lawrence O’Donnell Spots Latest Way Trump ‘Disgraces The American Presidency’

MS NOW host Lawrence O’Donnell on Wednesday continued holding President Donald Trump accountable for the consequences of his ongoing war on Iran, which has already cost the lives of at least seven U.S. military service members and more than 1,300 Iranians.

The “Last Word” host began by slamming Trump for starting “the most expensive war in American history” and lying about its cost, but argued his deception reached “a new low” by, O’Donnell said, claiming he didn’t know about a U.S. airstrike on an Iranian girls’ school.

The Feb. 28 airstrike in Minab killed at least 175 people, mostly children younger than 12.

“This time he’s lying about the deaths of girls in Iran brave enough to try to get an education,” O’Donnell said. “The girls who could be the future for the kind of Iranian society we would all like to see. Some of those girls might have helped lead Iran into that future.”

He continued, “And Donald Trump, once again, disgraces the American presidency, this time by saying, ‘I don’t know about it,’ when he is asked about the death of those girls killed by an American Tomahawk missile.”

Trump was asked Wednesday about a report from The New York Times citing preliminary findings of a U.S. military investigation, which concluded the school was struck by an American-made Tomahawk missile, and Trump responded, “I don’t know about it.” It is unclear in the video if Trump was saying he didn’t know about the attack or the report.

“Donald Trump doesn’t know about a lot of things,” O’Donnell said.

He continued, “Donald Trump doesn’t know most things that he needs to know and should know, but Donald Trump knows those girls were killed by one of his Tomahawk missiles. And he knows those girls would be alive today if he did not decide to start his war in Iran.”

O’Donnell was also taken aback by the lack of effort Trump displayed in diffusing responsibility, noting that he initially blamed Iran — and suggested Monday that the country had somehow obtained a U.S. Tomahawk missile and bombed its own school.

“And the next day, Donald Trump said there’s an investigation going on, so he wasn’t going to talk about it,” O’Donnell said. “And then today, today he reached a new low in Trump lying when he tried to claim he didn’t know about the attack.”

O’Donnell reiterated Wednesday just how offensive the phrasing is, particularly as multiple sources have since told CBS News that dozens of troops have suffered serious injuries in the war — including brain trauma, shrapnel wounds and potentially amputation.

“In a little excursion, girls don’t get killed in their classrooms,” he said. “In a little excursion, soldiers don’t face amputation. In a little excursion, soldiers don’t have brain damage. In a little excursion, soldiers are not killed. Donald Trump’s war is what killed those girls.”
