London’s Burning star John Alford found dead in prison cell sparking major investigation
- Disgraced London’s Burning actor John Alford has been found dead in his prison cell, sparking a major investigation at HMP Bure near Norwich.
- The 54-year-old paedophile was discovered unresponsive in his bed on Friday morning when guards went to wake him up. Prison medics were called but could not revive him.
- A source told the Daily Star: “Enquiries are ongoing and they will want to wrap it up quickly.” The prison is now effectively in lockdown while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
- Alford was serving an eight-and-a-half-year sentence after being convicted in January of sexually assaulting two teenage girls. He was found guilty of four counts of sexual activity with a 14-year-old and charges relating to a 15-year-old at a party in Hertfordshire in April 2022.
- The court heard how Alford, charged under his real name John Shannon, bought £250 worth of alcohol and supplies before assaulting the girls while they were drunk. He sexually assaulted the younger victim in a garden and toilet, and inappropriately touched the older girl as she lay on a sofa.
- During his trial, Alford claimed the allegations were “scandalous” and a “set-up” designed to “extort money” from him. He denied all charges and said he suffered from mental health issues including anxiety and depression.
- The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman are now investigating the death as standard procedure for all deaths in custody.
