Stephen Bunting has hit out at German darts fans after referee Huw Ware had to tell the crowd to “shut up” after the match was disrupted by whistling spectators. Ware was officiating as Bunting faced home favourite Niko Springer at the European Darts Trophy in Gottingen, Germany.

With the score at 5-5, the contest headed into a decisive leg. But a thrilling finale was marred when Bunting faced whistling from the crowd as he prepared to throw.

This prompted experienced PDC official Ware, who had already appealed for respectful behaviour, to tell the disruptive minority to “shut up”. The Welsh referee declared: “I’ve asked politely once and I’ll say it impolitely: shut up please. Trying to have a game of darts up here.”

Springer subsequently claimed the leg to secure a third round meeting with Ross Smith on Sunday. Following his tournament exit, Bunting addressed the whistling incident.

He wrote: “I never moan about defeats or cry about them but feel really hurt tonight even though it was a small minority of people.

“To boo and whistle at important times through any match isn’t acceptable and if you want to do that go to a football match. I understand why certain players don’t want to travel over here for the whistling but like I say it isn’t all the time.”

Ware wasn’t the only official to slam the whistlers. The PDC’s European MC, Philip Brzezinski, grabbed the microphone to declare: “There’s 3-4 people who through their whistling destroyed an amazing game, to those 4 people from 4 thousand we’ll say: you are not welcome here. We don’t want this.”

The outburst earned applause from Springer and numerous spectators in the venue. Brzezinski subsequently took to social media to reinforce his stance.

He posted: “99,99% of the crowd in Göttingen tonight were amazing, as good as gold and we appreciate them greatly. Thank you [heart emoji]”.

“And to the 4 or 5 people that interfered with their whistling, I will stick to what I said on stage: we don’t want you here.”

It emerged just two days following night six of the Premier League in Nottingham being disrupted by whistling. The initial incident happened during Luke Littler’s quarter-final clash with Gerwyn Price, with the world champion delivering a theatrical celebration to the audience in response.

Luke Humphries also endured his own whistling troubles as he defeated Littler in the semi-finals, with disruption occurring on a match dart before he ultimately secured victory and cupped his ears towards the spectators.
