A British-born publishing heir has tragically died in a horrific plane crash, along with his pregnant wife. Reports suggest that a doctor and a footballer were also among the casualties when the aircraft crashed in San Marcos, Guatemala on Saturday evening.

Harald Undrum was an heir to Christian Schibsted, the founder of Norwegian publishing and media group Schibsted, which owns several leading Scandinavian newspapers. The 53-year-old and his wife, Judith Mazariegos, 26, were expecting a child at the time of the tragic incident.

Mr Undrum was born in London and later adopted into the Schibsted dynasty, one of Norway’s wealthiest families, reports the Mirror.

The group were travelling on a private plane that crashed in a remote area of the municipality of Esquipulas Palo Gordo. Local media reported that three people died at the scene, whilst another who was rushed to hospital also sadly passed away.

Residents in the village of Villa Hermosa reported hearing a loud bang emanating from a mountainous area. The fire service – ASONBOMD – subsequently confirmed the discovery of the wreckage of a small plane bearing the registration TG-SCO.

According to the country’s civil air authority and La Aurora International airport, the aircraft involved in the accident was a Cessna 182. An investigation is now underway to determine why the plane suddenly lost altitude before crashing into the rugged terrain.

It remains unclear why Mr Undrum or the other passengers were in Guatemala and whether the trip was for leisure or business purposes. Mr Undrum had attended school in England before relocating to Norway in 1998.

He encountered legal difficulties after providing a substantial loan to a financier in 2005 and subsequently moved to Spain with his wife and three children where he worked as a lorry driver.

However, his marriage collapsed and he reportedly declared bankruptcy in 2025 despite allegedly holding millions in his bank account. He is also understood to have faced scrutiny from Norwegian tax authorities which resulted in assets being confiscated.
