Countless Brits dream of a summer-ready garden, adorned with blooming flowers and brimming with perennial plants alongside a gorgeous patio space that makes warm evenings absolutely magical. However, those who’ve recently moved into fresh properties – particularly new builds – will likely find themselves amid a garden transformation, reimagining the bare, lacklustre space that greets them.

Whilst the sweet peas might be planted and the grass nourished ready for summer, one element that can inject some charm into a space desperately needing character is festoon lighting.

I installed such illumination in my revamped garden last year and it proved a modest yet powerful addition that completely transformed the area after dark, representing excellent value from Amazon. Although the precise lights I purchased are no longer stocked on Amazon, I’ve discovered a bargain on some remarkably similar options that have been reduced in the retailer’s Spring Deals Day promotion.

Stretching 25ft in length, the Lepro Solar Festoon Lights feature 25 LED bulbs that operate across four distinct settings (constant illumination, slow flashing, rapid flashing, sporadic bursts). Priced at £27.97 down from the standard £34.99, these lights harness solar power – perfect during summer – and instead of depending on mains electricity (which would require connection to an indoor socket), they boast an integrated sensor that activates at twilight and daybreak, automatically illuminating after dark and switching off during daylight hours, reports the Mirror.

When sunshine isn’t blessing us with its presence (a regrettably common occurrence in Britain), the solar panel can be detached from the lights and recharged indoors via USB for evening use.

The Lepro Solar Festoon Lights are on sale at Amazon.

These lights boast an attractive design with spherical bulbs that emit sufficient illumination at night without being overpowering, creating a gentle, cosy atmosphere through their warm white glow.

Whilst these work brilliantly when suspended from fencing or garden poles, those wanting to illuminate particular trees, shrubs or decorative features might prefer LED Firefly String Lights, like these Smart Solar versions from Robert Dyas. At £24.99, they comprise 100 LED lights and offer both flashing and steady modes.

For a comparable option but slightly more compact, the Habitat 20 Warm White Festoon Solar Lights cost £15 and span 6m (just shy of 20ft). Perfect styling options for patios, gazebos, pergolas or simply a lawn, the Lepro lights have earned an impressive 4.3-star rating on Amazon from more than 4,200 reviews.

What’s even better is that, despite this rather reasonable price point, the lights appear to be durable and waterproof (so they can remain outdoors even during wet weather).

One customer detailed their experience, saying: “These lights were bought for me 2 years ago, and have worked perfectly since. Upon renovating a garden, I recently bought an additional set to compliment the existing set and they are brilliant as expected. I can say that with confidence because the original set, 2 years later are still working perfectly, still bright and remain illuminated all they way through the night (in summer). Very happy to recommend!”.

“I absolutely love these lights and frequently get asked where they’re from. I was after decent sized bulbs, not the smaller ones that look like Christmas lights,” commented another enthusiast. “These do not disappoint. Even on a cloudy day they will come on in the evening. After a charge from the USB they are SUPER bright so that option is really handy if you’re planning on having people over for a gathering. Otherwise, the solar panels charge it just fine.”

They did mention how it doesn’t come with a remote control, though this shouldn’t be a problem as they observed: “Turn on.. let it charge… Auto turns on at night. Don’t see the issue! Fantastic product and would recommend to others.”

One customer even gushed about how it was their ‘best Amazon purchase to date‘ and commented: “Lovely very bright warm coloured lights – much brighter than what I had before, didn’t realize solar lights could ever be that bright. Bulbs themselves were smaller that I expected, are about an inch in diameter but still nice.”

They did offer a cautionary note, though, about how delicate the bulbs can be. “Note the bulbs are quite fragile, managed to smash one when I was putting up but thankfully there was a spare in the pack” – so this is worth bearing in mind.

They finished by saying: “Adding to review a few months on – I love these lights – they are really lovely, the perfect brightness and give off amazing warm light for hours longer than my last set of lights, even on cloudy days! Best buy on Amazon yet.”
