Liverpool’s dominant Champions League victory over Galatasaray was delayed for several minutes in the closing stages due to a horror injury.
Galatasaray winger Noa Lang received extensive medical attention after appearing to trap or catch his hand on the advertising hoardings at the side of the pitch behind the goal.
The 26-year-old fell to the turf clutching his thumb in agony with blood pouring out of a seemingly large cut. Medical staff rushed to his side and gave him gas and air to relieve the pain. He was eventually stretchered off clutching his bandaged hand above his head.
According to ESPN, Lang has since been taken to hospital so he could have more treatment on his sickening injury.
TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist admitted he was concerned about the Dutchman and was shocked about the level of attention he received.
McCoist said: “I could tell there was a significant problem because one of the girls behind there, I’m not sure if she’s a photographer but you could see her face, the way she reacted.”
Lang received a standing ovation from all four corners of Anfield before Liverpool went on to see out their 4-0 win to reach the quarter-finals.
Arne Slot’s side returned to Anfield after suffering a 1-0 defeat away in Istanbul in the first leg. But the Reds put in a performance of the season worthy display to put Galatasaray to the sword.
Dominik Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah all found the back of the net but it should have been more.
Wilfried Singo put through his own net, only to be saved by an offside in the build-up, Alexis Mac Allister saw a late goal disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper, after Salah missed a first-half penalty.
Liverpool will play PSG in the quarter-final after the European champions put eight goals past Chelsea in 180 minutes. Arsenal are the only other remaining English club in the competitions after Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham were all knocked out.
