PMQs LIVE: Keir Starmer to face awkward Angela Rayner questions

Keir Starmer will today face MPs for the first time since Angela Rayner warned Labour is “running out of time” to deliver change.

Appearing at Prime Minister’s Questions, the PM is likely to be asked about criticism from his former Deputy Leader, who had claimed the party had come to be seen to represent “the Establishment, not working people’.

It also comes less than 24 hours after an astonishing rant from the US President Donald Trump, in which he repeated his claim that Mr Starmer is “no Churchill”, in a rage of the UK not joining military action in the Middle East.

His tantrum came in response to the PM saying he would not allow the UK to be dragged into a wider war – and said Britain is working with allies to draw up a credible plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Greens leader calls for ‘wholesale change’ of how economy works

Zack Polanski called for “wholesale change” to the way the UK economy works, hitting out at “damage” he said had been caused by Thatcherism and austerity.

The Green leader said: “It does not have to be this way. We can rebalance the scales so that our hard earned money is ours again, so we can choose to save it for a weekend away, to pick up a gift for mum on the way to see her, or put something away for the kids for when they need it.

“But to do that, we do need to make a wholesale change to the way our economy works, because the damage didn’t end with Thatcherism. Instead, that damage was turbocharged by austerity after the crisis of 2008 hit.”

Gordon Brown says ‘moral obligation’ to improve end-of-life care

Former prime minister Gordon Brown has said there is a “moral obligation” to make “urgently needed improvements” to end-of-life care across the UK.

He called on the four governments in the UK to co-operate in a bid to ensure dying people can be “guaranteed the most compassionate and highest quality of care” regardless of where they live.

Mr Brown complained there is a currently a “postcode lottery” in the UK, which means not everyone who needs it can benefit from “high levels of care” as they approach the end of their life.

He raised the issue following the defeat on Tuesday of a Bill in the Scottish Parliament from Liberal Democrat MSP Liam McArthur which, if it had been passed, would have made Scotland the first nation in the UK to legalise assisted dying.

War in Middle East a ‘war of choice’

The Green leader Zack Polanski is currently giving his first major speech on the economy at the New Economics Foundation.

Discussing the conflict in the Middle East, he said: “This was not a war of self-defence, there was no imminent threat, negotiations were ongoing. It was, as the BBC’s international editor said, a war of choice.

“People across the Middle East are terrified of what Trump and Netanyahu’s war will mean for them and their loved ones, and the repercussions are echoing across the world as instability spreads and oil prices spike.”

Good morning

Good morning, the PM will today face questions at PMQs, less than 24 hours after his former Deputy leader Angela Rayner demanded a change of course.

Ms Rayner, who was forced to resign over a tax scandal in September, also launched a searing attack on the Government’s immigration plans.
