Golf lovers can relax to the unmistakable sound of The Open Championship

Golf lovers can relax to the unmistakable sound of The Open Championship thanks to a ‘first-ever’ immersive soundscape. Listeners are transported to the heart of the iconic tournament with one-of-a-kind audio recorded live at The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush last July.

From crashing waves and coastal winds to the roar of the crowd and the crisp strike of club-on-ball, the soundscape offers a rare sensory insight into one of sport’s most iconic stages.

As anticipation builds for The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale in July, fans and players alike can enjoy a powerful preview of the atmosphere, tension and drama that defines The Open. The audio experience was developed in partnership with renowned sound recordists Soho Sonic, who are based in London.

It’s claimed to be a moment of pure escapism that offers the chance to stand in the dunes of an iconic links course, feel the hush before the swing and hear the collective breath of the crowd.

Listeners can enjoy The Open from a new perspective, stepping into the shoes of the golfers as they prepare to take their shot, tune out the noise and focus on the moment.

There’s two versions to enjoy, with one blending a calming narration with the ambient sounds to help focus and relax. The other presents the pure, unfiltered soundscape of The Open for a fully immersive, atmospheric experience.

Mindfulness expert Neil Seligman, who contributed to the soundscape’s creation, said it offers a rare opportunity to train the mind like athletes train the body – by simulating pressure, focus and presence.

Neil said: “This soundscape is more than just audio, it is an immersive gateway into the soul of The Open. It allows listeners to step directly into the championship environment, to feel the tension, the anticipation and the serenity of the course in real time.

“By recreating the sensory experience of being on the links, the wind, the waves, the crowd, it offers a rare chance to train the mind in presence and focus, as elite athletes do.

“It’s a powerful tool for mindfulness, helping fans reconnect with the moment and experience the magic of The Open from the inside out.”

The initiative is part of golf governing body The R&A’s wider effort to highlight the final opportunity for fans to attend The Open on a championship day.

There’s the opportunity to do this through ‘hospitality experiences’ and ‘destination packages’ that combine tickets or hospitality with accommodation and travel.

Brett Tonkyn, director of Premium Experiences, said: “The sounds of The Open are as defining as the championship golf played over its historic venues – unpredictable, energetic and unforgettable.

“This soundscape gives fans a rare opportunity to experience that atmosphere ahead of time and to feel what it is like to be on the course before the first tee is struck.

It’s a true reflection of what makes The Open so special for millions of fans worldwide.”

The Open Soundscape can be listened to on the video above or can be found on Spotify, called Sounds of The Open.
