Sometimes a story makes you go weak at the knees. And the tale of the lottery ticket holder in south-east London who has missed out on a whopping great jackpot is certainly one of those.

The player has run out of time to come forward and collect their winning on £10.6million. That’s despite an extensive search from draw chiefs who gave them six months to come forward.

Ouch and double ouch. It would an absolute sickener. Imagine playing every week and likely coming nowhere near winning the big one. Then on the extraordinarily unlikely occasion you do match them all, you don’t realise you’ve won.

That’s the worst case of sod’s law we’ve ever heard. There are of course many possible explanations for the radio silence.

They may have got rid of the ticket without realising. Someone might have bought one drunk and forgot.

It could well have been a Lucky Dip they mislaid so didn’t know the numbers anyway. They may have even died before the draw was made.

The only winner here is all the local charities who are set to receive a massive windfall because of the missed claim. And whatever really happened, one thing’s for sure: We hope they never find out about their near-miss.

It seems almost unfathomable that you could ever get over something so traumatic.
