Met Office issues amber weather warning as Storm Dave brings potential ‘danger to life’ with 80mph gusts hitting parts of north Wales, northern England and southern Scotland
The Met Office has issued a warning of ‘disruptive and potentially damaging winds’ across parts of the UK as Storm Dave batters the country this Easter weekend. Weather experts have put an amber wind warning in place, which takes effect at 7pm on Saturday (April 4) and stays active until 3am on Sunday (April 5).
The alert encompasses sections of north Wales, northern England and southern Scotland. The Met Office bulletin cautions of a possible ‘danger to life’ from airborne debris and massive waves as blasts reaching 80mph could strike the region.
Powerful winds may also lead to transport disruptions and cancellations, structural damage or spark electricity outages, meteorologists warned, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The Met Office stated in its advisory, released on Saturday afternoon: “A spell of very strong southwesterly, then westerly winds is expected across north Wales, northern England and southern Scotland on Saturday evening and overnight before easing early on Sunday.”
“Gusts of 60-70 mph are possible widely with some coastal or exposed locations seeing gusts of around 80 mph.”
Motorists have been advised to steer clear of non-essential trips and to follow these guidelines if driving becomes necessary: travel at reduced speeds to lessen the effect of wind blasts and stay alert for tall vehicles/caravans on more vulnerable routes.
Exercise care when passing, and allow cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries, and buses extra space than normal Meanwhile, Storm Dave is set to unleash heavy snow and gale-force winds across northern regions of the UK. As much as 30 centimetres of snow could descend, with the Met Office issuing a yellow severe weather warning in Scotland for heavy snow and blizzards, which may cause travel and power disruptions.
Yellow severe weather warnings remain in effect for wind, encompassing all of mainland Scotland, Northern Ireland, parts of northern England and North Wales from Saturday evening through to Sunday.
