Drive for electrical vehicles stalling over cost level delays

The slow rollout of EV charging points risks holding back demand for battery-only cars, industry chiefs have warned.

Just 2,399 new public chargers were installed in the first two months of the year, a rate of 40 per day, according to figures from Zapmap, the charging point app. The Labour Government has made the transition to electric vehicles a key part of its green agenda.

But critics said not enough has been done to bolster the charging network.

Warning: The slow rollout of EV charging points risks holding back demand for battery-only cars

Mike Hawes of the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders said: ‘One in four new car buyers went electric last year thanks to increasing model choice, billions in incentives from manufacturers and government grants.

‘However, even with these massive commitments, uptake is still short of government targets. To move the market faster, charge point rollout must also accelerate.’
