A violent brute choked his own mother after she told him she “couldn’t give him a lift to the gym”. Andrew Malone, 52, seized the elderly woman by her throat and left her “thinking she was going to die” during the horrifying incident.

On another occasion, Malone retrieved a knife from the kitchen drawer, brandished it at his mother, and declared: “I’ll do 20 years and spit on your grave”. The court heard that Malone apologised after threatening his mum with the knife and returned it to the drawer.

Malone assaulted his mother on 15 October last year. Teesside Crown Court heard the victim managed to escape when Malone loosened his grip around her neck. She sought help from a relative and contacted the police.

Jenny Haigh, prosecuting, said that Malone flew into a rage when his mother denied him a lift to the gym. “He put his hands around the woman’s throat, telling her, ‘I’ll strangle you here and now,'” Ms Haigh added.

On Thursday, 2 April, Malone appeared in court for sentencing after admitting to threatening to kill his mother; intentional strangulation; and assault causing actual bodily harm, reports Teesside Live.

Ms Haigh stated that Malone’s mother first called the police in 2024. “He was drunk, it was after midnight, and he refused to leave her house,” Ms Haigh said.

Malone was apprehended and Ms Haigh recounted that while a police officer was cuffing him, he twisted the man’s finger back, leading to an assault conviction. On another instance, Ms Haigh revealed, Malone “threatened to burn his mum’s house down with her inside”.

Stephen Constantine, defending, stated that Malone’s relationship with his mother “…has broken down irretrievably. He tells me he has no wish to see his mother again”.

In a statement read out in court, the victim expressed: “I don’t understand why a son would do this to his mother. He’s my only child. I cannot live this life with my son anymore”.

Judge Jeremy Hill-Baker addressed Malone: “You are significantly younger, stronger, and more intimidating as a physical being than her. In what was initially a petty grievance about a lift, you acted in a rage. She said she thought she was going to die.

“She is confused because you are her son, but she felt strongly enough to call 999 and to see that you were prosecuted.”
