Donald Trump’s threat to wipe out a “whole civilisation” in Iran has sparked calls for him to be removed from office, with one former White House director demanding he be ousted “immediately”.

“Wake up: he is calling for a nuclear strike,” said Anthony Scaramucci, who served in Trump‘s first administration in July 2017. “Seek his removal immediately,” the former communications director added.

It comes after the president launched another shocking rant on Truth Social as his deadline for Iran to re-open the Strait of Hormuz looms. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” he wrote. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”

Trump went on to say that “47 years of extortion, corruption and death, will finally end” if Iran does not agree to a ceasefire and re-opening of Strait, through which around 20% of the world’s oil and gas passes.

He added: “However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?

“We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”

Responding to Trump’s threats, Iran vowed to continue blocking oil and gas supplies to the US and its allies. The IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) said in a post on Telegram that its “restraint has ended” and that it will deprive the US and its allies “of the region’s oil and gas for years to come”.

Mediators had been taking part in negotiations for a ceasefire deal, but Trump’s latest threat to destroy Iran’s “whole civilisation” has complicated efforts, the Wall Street Journal reports. An official said that Iran has now cut off communications with the US entirely.

Trump had given the Iranian regime until 8pm ET (1am on Wednesday UK time) to re-open the Strait of Hormuz.

US-Israeli forces have meanwhile reportedly struck Kharg Island – Iran’s primary oil export terminal. The island holds 94% of the country’s crude oil exports, serving as the main terminal for transferring oil from the mainland to international markets.
