The daughter of a man who sexually abused five of his children has decided to forgive him. Jessica Farrell, 48, was amongst the victims of her father, Noel Farrell, 70, who was recently given a 20-year prison sentence after admitting to multiple counts of sexual abuse against his four daughters and one son.

The appalling child abuse took place at different locations across County Sligo, Ireland, spanning two decades. Though she felt relieved that justice had at last been delivered, Jessica reveled she broke down in tears as the predator was led away from the courtroom after sentencing at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

Jessica was merely three-and-a-half when her father started abusing her. During one incident, she was taken into a room at a relative’s house and sexually assaulted, before her father gave her money for sweets to secure her silence.

She later went into foster care aged four, before challenging Farrell about his behaviour years afterwards. He deceived her, wrongly claiming he had already spent two years behind bars for the abuse.

In a profoundly moving interview on Virgin Media News, she told presenter Colette Fitzpatrick: “I confronted him and then I sort of forgave him. So I am a lot different than a few of them. I forgave him and I saw a different man then.

“Afterwards, it was like he changed. He didn’t do what he did back then.” When questioned if she loved him, she responded: “I love him for the man he turned out to be afterwards. Yes. Yeah, I do. I think I am the only one out of them. I just have a bigger heart. I just forgave him,” reports the Mirror.

Regarding the possibility of reconnecting, Jessica stated: “I would love to talk to him and I would love to find out more. Just more of his life, more of what he probably went through. Or just why he done it.

“Just, you know, I don’t know, just so many questions with no answers.”

Jessica was joined on Virgin Media News by her brother Christopher Farrell, who was merely one-and-a-half years old when their father first abused him.

The children were often confined in a room for days on end without food, resorting to drinking urine to survive.

Following his sister’s frank disclosure of her mixed feelings towards their father, Christopher was asked about his own thoughts when contemplating him.

He answered: “Disgusted. He may rot in jail. I’m totally the opposite. Deserves every day and more. That’s my opinion.”

As an adult, Christopher lived in the same town as his father, eventually marrying and starting his own family.

However, he confessed that he restrained himself from confronting Farrell and potentially doing something he might later regret, before he finally walked into a garda station to report the horrific abuse he had endured as a child.

When questioned if he could ever forgive him, like his sister, he responded: “Not a chance. No. Doesn’t deserve forgiveness from me or anyone I know. We have different opinions, but he is a monster in my eyes.”

Meanwhile, Jessica confessed that despite her love for her father, she still “hates him for what he did”.

She has since created her own family and reflected on the pain of having to tell her children about the true nature of their grandfather, rather than them finding out elsewhere or through the news.

The survivor stated: “My own kids couldn’t even believe it when I told them because they were so used to him as well since I had the bond with him. And then I told them about it, like they were in school. But they were all for us (getting justice).”

Christopher said that he continues to suffer due to his father’s actions, often waking up with a haunting feeling as if the abuse had happened just the day before.

The abuse of his children, who waived their right to anonymity so Farrell could be publicly named, included rape, sexual assault and indecent assault. The monster also pleaded guilty to the rape and indecent assault of Jessica.

Both siblings now openly discuss their experiences in an effort to encourage other survivors to come forward.

In a plea to the public, Jessica said: “Don’t take as long as we did. We took so long. So many people have lost their lives over it. There are so many people not knowing who to turn to or who to go to and it’s just, go to someone, an adult, someone you can trust, and then see where it goes from there.

“Or go to your local police station, someone, take the first step, then you will know afterwards if it is a good step or not or whether you can continue or not.”

Christopher added: “It can be very hard. It took me nearly 40 years to figure out. It was my body telling me. It was nothing else. It wasn’t people around me saying ‘go do this’. As I said to you, it was me personally.

“Take the first step. You know, there’s a lot of stigma around men definitely getting sexual abuse.”

He continued: “It is harder for men to step forward. If I could say to any men out there, you know, you’re not going to get better unless you do something about it. You’re probably going to end up taking your own life. You’re probably going to do something stupid, end up in jail.

“The only way forward is to come forward with it.”
