I Am Maximus has won the 2026 Grand National at Aintree on Saturday ridden by Paul Townend for Willie Mullins and JP McManus to regain his crown after winning in 2024.

The 34-horse field set off in the £1million prize money race, with I Am Maximus landing the £500,000 winners’ jackpot for owner JP McManus.

At the first fence well-fancied 9/1 shot and last year’s 4th Grangeclare West fell. Panic Attack (17/2) then fell at the second fence in a chaotic start which saw several horses fall or unseat their riders in the opening few fences.

Around 25 of the 34 horses made it round to the second lap. But that number was soon reduced again as Jagwar at 9/1 was among three to fall at fence 18.

28/1 outsider Jordans was pushed clear after leading for the final two fences but I Am Maximus reeled the outsider in as the legendary stayer powered through the field.

After a brilliant Aintree, the Skeltons’ Panic Attack went into 7/1 favourite an hour before the start, looking to become only the second mare to ever win the National. However, the 2024 winner and last year’s runner-up I Am Maximus went off as favourite at 5/1 after a lot of late money came for the JP McManus-owned horse.

Jagwar did briefly have a spell as favourite at 8/1 half an hour before post. Unfortunately, last year’s 33/1 winner Nick Rockett was unable to defend his crown after being withdrawn from the race on Thursday.
