Shocking footage of a pregnant 10-year-old has sparked outrage as figures highlight a deepening child pregnancy emergency. South Africa is facing a child pregnancy crisis so grave it is prompting renewed scrutiny of how rape, sexual violence and systemic neglect have been allowed to persist in full view.

In public maternity wards, girls as young as 10 are giving birth, not as isolated cases, but as part of a pattern campaigners say has become normalised. Moreover, videos and photos circulating online showing young girls with visible baby bumps have ignited fury.

A viral TikTok trend that took off in late 2025 and into early 2026 has intensified debate over child pregnancy, with underage girls sharing “lifestyle” clips featuring their newborns and infants.

These reportedly also include “day in my life” vlogs showing schoolwork alongside childcare, a surge of “New Year’s Babies” posts in early January 2026 (with cases reported as young as 12 in the Eastern Cape). There are also videos of lavish baby showers for 12 and 13-year-olds that critics say appear to celebrate pregnancies that should instead trigger safeguarding action.

Official figures for 2025 show more than 123,000 births were registered to mothers aged 19 and under, including more than 4,000 births to girls aged 10 to 12. The numbers reflect recorded hospital deliveries, not estimates, News.com.au reported.

The scale places South Africa among the countries with the highest recorded rates of child and adolescent pregnancy, while also raising questions about how effectively child protection and sexual offences laws are being enforced. The Democratic Alliance (DA), the country’s official opposition, has called it a “child-pregnancy pandemic” and says it is initiating a national investigation.

It is also reportedly accusing provincial health and social development departments of failing to comply with the Children’s Act. Furthermore, South Africa’s Sexual Offences Act requires statutory rape cases to be reported to police, but advocacy groups say clinical care often takes precedence over ensuring cases are referred for criminal investigation.

“Every pregnancy involving a child is rape,” one women’s rights activist told News.com.au, arguing that when cases are handled as medical events rather than alleged crimes, children are failed twice, first by the abuse, then by the system.

In the UK, teenage pregnancy remains a public health priority. While the long-term trend shows a steep fall, down by around 70% since 1998 , the most recent data points to the first increase in more than a decade, following the lifting of pandemic restrictions.

Figures for 2022, published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in July 2025, show the under-18 conception rate in England and Wales rose from 13.1 to 13.9 per 1,000 girls aged 15 to 17. Among under-16s, the rate increased slightly from 2.1 to 2.2 per 1,000 girls aged 13 to 15.

The ONS also said a record 58.2% of under-18 conceptions in England and Wales ended in abortion in 2022. Despite the uptick in conceptions, the birth rate among young mothers has stayed close to historic lows, with births to mothers under 20 at about 3.0 per 1,000.

The numbers vary sharply by area and deprivation. Health analysts reportedly highlight a wide gap between the places with the highest and lowest rates, with so-called hotspots including Blackpool and Hull reporting levels more than double the national average.

Although the UK’s rates have fallen dramatically over the past two decades, they remain higher than those seen in many Western European countries.
