  • Finnish driver Juha Miettinen, 66, has tragically died following a horrific seven-car pile-up at the Nurburgring 24-hour race in Germany.
  • The race was immediately halted after the multi-car accident in the early stages, with the other six drivers taken to hospital in non-life-threatening conditions.
  • Race control confirmed: “Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services, the paramedics were unable to save the driver involved, Juha Miettinen (BMW 325i, #121); the driver died in the Medical Centre after all attempts at resuscitation proved unsuccessful.”
  • It’s believed Miettinen may have been struck after getting out of his BMW during the chaos. Emergency services raced to the scene as all cars were ordered into the pit lane.
  • The race will not resume on Saturday evening, with organisers stating: “The thoughts of everyone involved in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring are with the bereaved family of Juha Miettinen.”
  • A minute’s silence will be held in memory of the motorsport competitor during Sunday’s race grid formation at 1pm.
