NEED TO KNOW: Prince Andrew scandal forces closure of dozens of Duke of York pubs across Britain

  • More than a dozen pubs named ‘The Duke of York’ have closed across Britain since Prince Andrew’s links to Jeffrey Epstein were revealed.
  • Windsor’s Duke of York was among the first to shut in July 2022, with the entire building demolished and replaced with shops and flats. The pub sat just a mile from the royal castle.
  • In Chorley, Lancashire, a historic Duke of York pub built in 1782 has been approved for conversion into 20 bedsits. Councillor Alex Hilton slammed the plans, saying: “There are dog kennels that are bigger than some of these rooms.”
  • Other Duke of York establishments in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and South London have also been sold or converted. One owner’s daughter said the venue had “been in decline the past five years.”
  • Some pubs have survived by changing their names, with a Blackpool establishment renaming itself ‘The Duke’ under new management.
  • In Fitzrovia, West London, the new landlord is removing a portrait of Prince Andrew that hung outside since 2014. Pub group director Heydon Mizon told the Star: “There have been many Duke of Yorks over the years. It would be fair to say that we will choose a different signage scheme for the pub in future.”
