Daily Star’s music guru gives you the lowdown on Jessie Ware’s new discotastic LP, while Skindred get the blood pumping with You Got This
Jessie Ware’s disco needs you so definitely bring your dancing shoes and plenty of sparkle to her ace four star new LP, Superbloom.
Continuing the theme set by her previous Mercury nominated set, That! Feels Good! fans are transported back to the late seventies and do the Hustle to the many shades of disco from orchestral (Automatic) to Italo house (Ride) via a saucy dollop of rare groove (Sauna), with Jessie playing the glitterball diva to a tee.
The luxurious title track deserves its headlining flowers, part Barry White maximalism, part psychedelic outtake from Hair the musical, it’s the perfect melange of all things groovy. A pure rush of musical escapism, it’s bloomin’ marvellous.
Jessie tours arenas later this year and said of the music: “I’m exploring sensuality but in a more gentle, warm way, while my last albums had more of a melancholy.
“And then when I think about performing, I kind of have to see it in a different setting. I am playing iconic venues around the world and I couldn’t be happier. It will be filled with celebration, dancing, theatre, cowboys and goddesses and of course a LOT of singing.”
A different kind of dance is being encouraged by Skindred on You Got This. Slimmed down to trio, mercifully the ragga rockin’ ravers have lost none of their eclectic power.
In the spirit of AC/DC they pay tribute to “those about to rock” on the chugging title track then Benji Webbe does a mean er…Richard Blackwood impression for Can I Get, and the answer kids is of course “woo woo”.
It’s a surprisingly sedate lift off by their own furious standards, particularly the reggae lite Broke which sounds prime for holiday resort beach bars. Fear not because This Is The Sound rips through speakers faster than a Friday night Vindaloo, while the bottom end on dubtastic Glass is way more impressive than the entire Kardashian clan combined.
As with all Skindred releases you won’t get the full impact of the music until you experience it live, and they’ll be at Boomtown, Beautiful Days and Cardiff Castle events this summer.
Big new tunes to stream this week include:

MASSIVE ATTACK / Boots On The Ground
PIXIE LOTT / Good Wife
TEMPLES / Vendetta
