EXCLUSIVE: Premier League icon Gus Poyet is a huge fan of his compatriot Luis Suarez and he had a bold view on the former Liverpool striker
Premier League icon Gus Poyet gave his verdict on his compatriot Luis Suarez’s Premier League legacy and how he compares to Mohamed Salah.
Poyet knows all about scoring goals in the Premier League having played for Chelsea and Tottenham in the late 90s and early 2000s, scoring double figures in the league for four successive seasons from an advanced midfield role.
As a Uruguayan, Poyet has been incredibly supportive of Suarez throughout the years and has backed the striker as one of the best to ever play for Liverpool, and in the Premier League, despite spending just three-and-a-half controversial years at Anfield where he scored 82 goals in 133 games.

Poyet spoke to the Daily Star Sport, via the popular iGaming site Casino Guru, known for its thorough UK casino list and in-depth reviews about Suarez’s place in the all-time Premier League debate.
He said: “For me, Luis Suarez ranks as one of the top five Liverpool players from the Premier League era for sure and right up there with Premier League all time players.
“Well at his peak at Liverpool, he was unstoppable and unplayable. Everything he hit turned into a goal and when you speak with Steven Gerrard, who is someone who has played with the best players in the world, he talks so highly of Suarez, which proves to me that he should be in the top five Liverpool players in the Premier League era for sure and also in the Premier League.
“He did this for a short period compared to others, but in this period, there was no one better for sure.”
Poyet also touched on how he compares to Salah, who is set to leave Anfield after nine years at the end of the season having won everything there is to win.
Salah will leave Liverpool forever remembered as a legend, a reputation that Suarez only lacked due to him failing to win the league or Champions League.
“Compared to Mo, look Mo won the Premier League and Champions League and Suarez didn’t, so like other top Premier League players, those who won the Premier League may be higher in the reckoning, but Suarez for that period and season especially was incredible.”
Poyet added that he feels Suarez is ‘disrespected’ by English football fans due to his many controversies.
“He doesn’t get the full respect he deserved in England because of the stamping incident, which is a shame as Suarez was incredible for the time he was at Liverpool,” Poyet argued.
“Ask any defender who played against him at that time and I am very sure they were glad he left as he caused them many problems with his goal scoring.
“I am sure if you ask any Liverpool fan around the world about Suarez, there is so many positive emotions which come up and that is the most important is that you give your all and leave a positive thought from your hard work and goals.”
