A motorcycle racing champion has died after suffering catastrophic injuries in a crash during a championship event.

Gustavo Silveira, known as ‘Gao’, passed away after fighting for his life in hospital for several days following the accident in Anitapolis, in southern Brazil. The 27-year-old rider was competing in a Road Race Brasil event on Sunday, April 19, when the crash happened.

They said: “Today is not a race day. It is a day of silence. With immense sorrow, we announce the passing of rider Gustavo, our Gao. More than a rider, he is part of us — of our essence, our passion, the soul of this sport.”

Gustavo had been one of the rising names in Brazilian motorcycle racing. In 2025, he became champion in the SuperBike EVO 1000cc category in his debut season, securing multiple podium finishes and establishing himself on the national circuit.

He also competed in the GP600 class of the MOTO1000GP series, where he recorded wins in Goiania and Cascavel, and rode for teams including Pioneiro Motonil and DFG.

Tributes have flooded social media, with fellow riders and fans describing him as a dedicated and fearless competitor. During his hospital stay, supporters even launched appeals for blood donations in an effort to help save his life.
