Buddhist monks found with 110kg of cannabis at airport in biggest drug bust

  • A group of Buddhist monks have been arrested at Sri Lanka’s main international airport with 110kg of cannabis hidden in their luggage after returning from an all-expenses-paid trip to Thailand.
  • The men were caught with around 5kg of potent Kush each, stashed in “false walls” of their suitcases in what police are calling the biggest drug bust in Bandaranaike International Airport’s history. They’ve been remanded in custody until May 2nd for further questioning.
  • The monks claimed they were told by another monk “these parcels are a donation” and someone would collect them later.
  • A 23rd monk believed to have organised the trip has also been arrested in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. Police found the drugs hidden among school supplies and sweets.
  • Investigation revealed photos and videos on the monks’ phones showing them enjoying their break in casual clothes. This is understood to be the first time a group of monks have been arrested for drug smuggling into the country.
  • The Daily Star previously reported how four Buddhist monks were arrested after drugs, porn, sex toys, and escort directories were allegedly found at their temple in Thailand.
