A man has been taken hospital after a substance was thrown over him. The incident happened on Newington, just off Bold Street, Liverpool, shortly after 3pm today (April 29).

A police cordon is currently in effect along the entirety of Newington, which links Bold Street with Renshaw Street. Several businesses situated near the cordon, including Oxfam and the Newington Temple pub, remain open.

Police officers, fire service personnel and paramedics have all at the scene, reports the Liverpool Echo.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that officers are in Liverpool city centre after a substance was thrown at a man this afternoon, Wednesday 29 April.

“At around 1.55pm, emergency services were called to the junction of Bold Street and Newington to reports of a woman and a man, squirting an unknown liquid towards a man. Initial tests indicate that the liquid was some form of domestic cleaning product.

“The victim has been taken to hospital for assessment.”

Detective Inspector Paula Jones said: “This is believed to have been a targeted attack and enquiries are ongoing to trace the suspects, who we believe made off on foot towards Oldham Street.

“I want to assure people that there is no wider risk to the public. If you were in the area or work on Bold Street, please check devices and pass on any images or footage directly to police.”

One woman, who works on Newington, told the ECHO: “I don’t know what happened but I heard all the fuss after. I heard all the police sirens and then the fire engine came.”

There is a discarded brown jacket within the cordon. It is not known whether this is linked to the incident. Forensic teams are now on the scene.
