In fewer than 20 recorded cases worldwide, the UK’s first twins with different fathers — sisters Michelle and Lavinia — have shared how a DNA test showed they were half-sisters, calling themselves ‘miracles’
Sisters Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne, the UK’s first documented case of twins with different fathers, have spoken out about discovering their extraordinary circumstance, declaring “we’re miracles”.
In a new episode of BBC Radio 4’s The Gift, the twins shared with Jenny Kleeman their decision to undergo DNA testing to confirm they were half-sisters, despite being twins. Michelle and Lavinia are among fewer than 20 recorded cases worldwide of heteropaternal superfecundation, a biological phenomenon where multiple eggs are released within the same menstrual cycle and fertilised by sperm from different men.
Over two episodes of The Gift’s third series, Michelle and Lavinia recounted taking at-home DNA tests to address Michelle’s long-held doubts about her paternity. Michelle had always questioned her resemblance to the man she thought was her father, James, saying: “I saw this picture and just thought, you don’t even look anything like me…There’s no similarity there… So I bought myself a kit.”
The test results arrived on the same day as their mother’s passing, 14 February 2022, revealing that James was not Michelle’s biological father. Instead, her father was a man named Alex, the brother of a friend of their mother’s. After contacting Alex’s family, Michelle learned that he had struggled with addiction and homelessness.
She also had the chance to meet a new cousin and showed Lavinia pictures of her recently discovered relatives, prompting Lavinia to assume Alex must be her father as well. However, upon seeing those photographs, Lavinia felt an identical sense of disconnection that Michelle had experienced when looking at pictures of James. Seeking clarity, Lavinia opted for her own DNA test, wanting “just wanted confirmation”.
The results revealed one anticipated truth – James was not her father – and one unforeseen surprise: neither was Alex. Initially, Lavinia wasn’t keen on uncovering her father’s identity, but Michelle was resolute in her pursuit of answers. Michelle successfully tracked down Arthur, who Lavinia described as “a little bit nervous” with “an exuberant character, like me”, reports the Mirror.
Lavinia and Arthur have since been meeting several times a month. Lavinia shared: “I feel like I’ve found a place to belong, and that place is with my dad.”
It remains unclear whether their mother was aware that her children had different fathers, but Arthur hinted she might have known he fathered one of them, as she approached him after discovering her pregnancy.
Lavinia reflected on the newly uncovered family secret: “The fact that Michelle and I survived whatever that process was and are here to tell the tale – we’re miracles. We’re always going to have a closeness that can’t be broken.” Michelle expressed: “I think Lavinia and I have both equally gained more than we could ever, ever have thought of or conceived, ever. I myself don’t feel like I’ve lost anything”, further stating “She’s my twin sister. Nothing takes away from that.”
The twins’ episode of The Gift was a tribute to their mother and her challenging life journey. Michelle revealed that their mother was born in Jamaica and moved to England at the age of five. She went on to say that her mum was “in and out of foster care” as it “wasn’t safe for her to be at home” with her abusive stepfather.
In requesting the show to be dedicated to their mother, Lavinia stated: “We could have maybe found our fathers and had more clarity about who we were earlier in life. But I forgive my mum for everything.”
