Wayne Townsend proposed to his stunning girlfriend at the World Seniors Snooker Championship

Snooker star Wayne Townsend proposed to his long-term girlfriend, just moments after suffering a thumping defeat at the World Seniors Championship.

Townsend, 46, went up against Dominic Dale in the last 32 at the Crucible, Sheffield on Thursday, as he looked to get his tournament off to a positive start. But Townsend suffered a demoralising first-round exit without winning a single frame, suffering a 4-0 defeat to Dale and bowing out of the competition.

His afternoon didn’t end all bad, however, as Townsend proposed his now fiancée post-match – and she said YES. Footage on social media showed Townsend get down on one knee and ask his partner to marry him, and it didn’t take long for her to accept the proposal as fans from inside the Crucible got on their feet to celebrate.

This isn’t the first time there has been a marriage proposal at the snooker. But it is rare for players to ask the question, especially after suffering defeat without laying a punch on his opponent.

Chaos struck later in the evening session at the World Seniors, as the tournament was suspended due to an “unplayable table”. It happened when Matthew Stephens was facing off against Dale on table two.

The pair were asked to stop due to a fault on the table. Organisers were called after Stevens attempted to pot a red, only to see both red and white jump off the cushion and onto the floor.

“Due to a fault with Table Two, there will be no further play on it this evening,” the statement from the World Seniors Snooker Tour read. Matthew Stevens and Dominic Dale will conclude their match on Table One following Ali Carter v Roger Farebrother.

“Alfie Burden and Igor Figueiredo will play at 9pm BST in a private area of the practice room. Table Two will be replaced overnight.”

The decision led to the match between Stevens and Dale resuming on the opposite table, while Alfie Burden and Igor Figueiredo played their match behind closed doors in the practice room at the Crucible. Figueiredo went on to claim a 4-0 victory over Burden to book a spot in the quarter-final, where he will face Robert Milkins.

The announcement from the World Seniors Snooker Tour led to some confusion amongst snooker fans on social media, with some questioning what went wrong with the table to cause the bump.
