A 16-year-old girl has died after plummeting from a 550ft-high waterfall swing.
The teenager warned operators moments before her fatal fall: “It’s not tight enough.” The victim, reportedly a tourist surnamed Liu, was observed being helped onto the swing ride – a high-altitude pulley-and-rope system that stretches across a 550ft (168m) waterfall drop – by two staff members.
She was set to complete a 985-ft arc over the gorge. Onlookers said the teenager repeatedly yelled “it’s not tight enough” and “it’s loose” at staff members moments before she was launched over the precipice. As her body cleared the safety barrier, the rope suddenly loosened and she plummeted onto the rocky surface below.
The devastating incident occurred at the Maliuyan Adventure Park in Huaying City, China, on Sunday (May 3).
The Park had been operating for just over a month, promoting “extreme” adrenaline-fueled experiences.
Emergency medical crews rushed the teenager to a local hospital, but she was tragically declared dead upon arrival due to the extent of her injuries.
No official cause has yet been established.
The attraction issued a temporary shutdown notice on Monday and activities will remain halted until May 10, as reported by NeedToKnow.
Huaying City officials announced that an investigation team had been established to examine the teen’s death on May 5.
The attraction’s operator, Chongqing Adventure Camp, is presently facing scrutiny to establish whether equipment upkeep and personnel training complied with national safety requirements.
Bereaved family members of the victim have called for “full accountability” from the park, claiming that fundamental safety measures were ignored to cope with large numbers of visitors.
The location, marketed for its striking karst terrain and thrill-seeking pursuits, had undergone inspection by senior local authorities as recently as April 18 with no safety issues flagged at that time.
The inquiry remains ongoing.
