A 40-year-old man has been charged with five counts of attempted murder following a hit-and-run in Arnold town centre, in which a Nottingham footballer sustained life-threatening injuries
A man who has been charged with five counts of attempted murder following a hit-and-run in Arnold town centre has been named by police. Nottinghamshire Police said multiple pedestrians were struck in Market Place after a red Vauxhall Astra mounted a kerb in the early hours of Saturday, May 9.
One of the five victims, a Woodthorpe Park Rangers player, sustained life-threatening injuries during the incident. The incident took place at 1.12am on Saturday, May 9, with a police cordon in place for around 17 hours.
A 40-year-old suspect was arrested later that day, reports Nottinghamshire Live. Counter Terrorism Police have not been involved in the investigation, the police said.
Duane Anthony, of Marton Road, Chilwell, has now been charged with multiple offences, including five counts of attempted murder.
He has also been charged with aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and driving without valid insurance. Anthony is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday, May 11.
Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, who is leading the investigation for Nottinghamshire Police, said: “As we share today’s news, our thoughts remain with those affected by this incident, in particular the man who sustained life-threatening injuries.
“The victims and their families have been updated on today’s charging decision, which we hope will provide some small degree of comfort at this difficult time.
“This was a shocking incident that will have been incredibly distressing for all those involved and anyone who witnessed it happen.
“On that note, I’d ask people to please not speculate about this incident, online or otherwise, as doing so could potentially impede the pursuit of justice.
“As our investigation continues, I would like to thank the entire investigation team, who worked around the clock throughout the weekend to help secure these charges.”
Woodthorpe Park Rangers Football Club issued a statement on Sunday, May 10, confirming three of the victims are team members, including a player who was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and their manager.
The statement read: “On Friday evening [May 8], we celebrated our end-of-season awards. From a lovely evening, this ended up in complete heartbreak.
“Three members of our team, including the manager, were struck by a car in Arnold town centre.
“This has left one of our players fighting for his life in hospital. The other two are recovering well with small injuries.
“We are hoping and praying for our player, who is a much-loved lad by all.
“We are supporting each other the best we can. We are all clearly struggling right now and are asking for privacy and respect so we can get our heads around what has happened.
“This is a heartbreaking and awful time for our club. We thank you for all the well wishes and support.”
