A man in his 20s has died after a van went over a cliff in the Marsden area of South Shields, with multiple emergency services attending the scene this morning
A young man in his 20s has tragically lost his life after a van plummeted over a cliff. Northumbria Police were alerted at approximately 6am on Wednesday to a report of “a concern for welfare of a person near the A183 Coast Road” in the Marsden area of South Shields.
It was reported that a van had came off the road and veered over the cliffs onto the beach below, with one person believed to be inside.
A spokesperson for the force stated later in the day: “Emergency services attended the scene and following a search involving multiple partner agencies, the body of a man in his 20s was sadly found. The man’s next of kin have been informed.”
The spokesperson confirmed that the vehicle involved is being retrieved from the scene and added: “There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death and a report is being prepared for the coroner.”
The North East Ambulance Service said it responded to the incident, dispatching a clinical team leader and an ambulance crew. Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and Tynemouth RNLI also confirmed their attendance at what the RNLI referred to as a “multi-agency call.”
Chronicle Live reports that one Northumbria Police vehicle remained at the scene around 4pm.
The tragedy comes as three women found dead on Brighton seafront this morning. They were understood to have been at a student night at a nearby nightclub. The women, believed to be late teens to early 20s were reportedly fully clothed when they were discovered.
During a press conference held at the incident location along the shoreline, Sussex Police Chief Superintendent Adam Hays described it as a “tragic incident”. “Our priority right now is to identify all three women and contact their next of kin,” he said.
“I know this incident will be highly distressing for the community, and we are working hard with our partners to understand exactly what has happened. This includes gathering and reviewing CCTV in the surrounding area.” The coastguard is not searching for anyone else, he added.
