A footballer suffered a horrific lower leg injury

A footballer’s foot was left hanging on by his sock after suffering a horrific leg break that left his team-mate in horror.

Brazilian ace Romario da Silva sustained a shocking injury while playing in the Honduran Primera Division for FC Motagua against Olancho. The 36-year-old was tracking back to defend a counter-attack when he was the final defender left in a two-on-one situation.

Attempting to go shoulder to shoulder with the opposing striker as his team led 2-0 in the 55th minute, he seemingly took a wrong step on the pitch his studs became caught in the ground.

Under the momentum of his falling opponent, Romario’s leg appeared to snap, leaving his foot gruesomely attached presumably only by his skin, or even just his football sock.

There was immediate panic among both sets of players on the field as medics were urgently called for. One of Romario’s team-mates cradled his head while others dropped to their knees and covered their face in horror.

After several minutes of treatment by physios and paramedics, Romario was stretchered away down the tunnel before the game resumed with both teams unsurprisingly shaken at the extent of one of the worst football injuries seen.
