Manchester United are reportedly ready to open talks with Michael Carrick over becoming the club’s next permanent manager.

The 44-year-old took the reins of his former club in January following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. Appointed as interim manager until the end of the season, Carrick has impressed by winning 10 of his 15 games and securing a return to the Champions League.

Carrick has remained one of the frontrunners for the job and it’s now reported by Sky Sports that United are ready to open talks with Carrick about taking the job on a permanent basis. Those formal discussions are expected to begin before United’s final game of the season away at Brighton on May 24.

Carrick is currently the ‘first choice’ with the hierarchy, but the United board have not completely ruled out the possibility of appointing a different manager.

United want to speak to Carrick first about the position after being impressed by his popularity with the squad, his handling of the media and his understanding of the heritage and size of the football club.

But the results on the pitch have also been a massive factor. Carrick has led United to 3rd in the table and the Red Devils sealed their return to the Champions League by beating arch-rivals Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford.

Since Carrick took charge, United have accumulated the most amount of points across the Premier League with 33 points coming from 15 games.

United secured wins over Manchester City and Arsenal in Carrick’s first two games in charge, and have beaten Liverpool, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Tottenham

However, United have been determined to mull over several potential appointments rather than appoint Carrick at the earliest convenience. But it’s now reported that talks will happen within days and it is believed there should be no significant difficulty reaching an agreement.
