The Muppets have unveiled a star studded half time show at the World Cup final starring Madonna, BTS and Miss Piggy alongside Coldplay
With the World Cup just weeks away an incredible line-up of stars have been unveiled to play the first ever half time show courtesy of The Muppets.
Earlier this year Coldplay were announced to be headlining the gig and now Chris Martin has joined kids favourites Elmo and Kermit The Frog to reveal that Madonna, BTS and Shakira will be helping them rock New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on July 19.
In a YouTube skit Chris has to explain to Elmo: “A half time show is where people get together and there’s singing, and there’s dancing, and there’s music, and it’s a chance to show how amazing, all different kinds of humans are. And we get to raise some money for children’s education.”
Elmo then pokes fun at the Coldplay star’s voice: “Mr. Chris wants some singing lessons, right?”
Chris responds: “Well, I definitely need some singing lessons from you I’d love that. But what I’d really like to ask is if you could help try and find some giant stars to be part of the show?”
Elmo then suggests Madonna while Cookie Monster offers “what about BTS?” Then Elmo calls the K-pop Kings on his phone who agree to help.
Finally Chris ponders: “We just need one more big star.”
That’s Mis Piggy’s cue to enter: “Did someone say big star? I’d be happy to help. This whole show is gonna be about me!”
Chris replies diplomatically: “I mean, it’s about togetherness, really.” Piggy adds: “As long as I don’t have to share a dressing room.”
It’s Muppets drummer Animal’s idea to bring on Shakira to which Statler and Waldor quip: “Can you believe it? They’re doing a halftime show during the World Cup final. That doesn’t sound half bad. Well, it doesn’t sound half good, either.”
It’s the first time the World Cup has hosted a half time show, much in the spirit of the Super Bowl. However, there are fears it will slow the match down as the gig could last up to 25 minutes instead of the usual 15 minute half time break.
However, Shakira has plenty of World Cup history as her song Waka Waka was the official song for the 2010 South Africa World Cup.
The Colombian is also releasing an anthem for this year’s tournament, named Dai Dai.
Coldplay are no strangers to big sporting events either having played the Super Bowl themselves.
Getting Madonna on board is a huge coup as her new album Confessions Part 2 will be out by then. As is supergroup BTS who are the biggest live draw in the world right now.
