Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed he is involved in talks with the club’s chiefs over next season despite uncertainty surrounding his future after a shocking season
Liverpool will travel to Aston Villa on Friday evening knowing victory could virtually guarantee Champions League qualification for next season.
Arne Slot’s troubled campaign reached fresh depths in last weekend’s 1-1 stalemate with Chelsea as he faced jeers from the Anfield crowd. Since then, talk has once more turned to the Dutchman’s future, with some claiming his position at L4 has become impossible to maintain. Nevertheless, the 47 year old is understood to retain the support of Fenway Sports Group, the club’s owners, thanks to Slot orchestrating Liverpool’s remarkable Premier League triumph last term.
Securing a spot in Europe’s elite competition for another campaign would undoubtedly lift some of the heat off Slot. But the revelation that currently unemployed Xabi Alonso is considering the Chelsea vacancy has thrown a spanner in the works. Today’s developments see Slot provide a fascinating insight into his future plans. Here’s all the latest news from Anfield.

Arne Slot’s update
Slot has confirmed he has held discussions with Liverpool’s top brass to map out next season’s strategy, despite the uncertainty hanging over him, reports the Mirror.
The Dutchman has disclosed he has been in talks with the club’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, regarding summer recruitment.
Quizzed about the club’s summer plans ahead of Liverpool’s Friday night clash with Villa, Slot initially seemed hesitant to delve into his future, responding: “We know where we go on tour”, in reference to Liverpool’s planned pre-season trip to the USA.
But in a twist, Slot then elaborated: “Plans have been made, talks have been ongoing between the club and new players, and I am involved in that if that’s what you want to know.”

Sky has cut 20% off its entire range of Glass TVs until June 17, including the more budget-friendly Air model which now starts from £4.50 per month.
When asked about his own position at the club next season, he stated: “I don’t think I’m deciding that alone, but I have every reason to believe I will be Liverpool manager next season. First of all, I am contracted to this club, and second of all, from all the talks we are having. So yeah, that is my take on it.
“If you don’t have the best season, especially if you compare it with last season and the other season, maybe you have a different debate. But if you compare it to last season, this has definitely not been a great season.
“Then it is also normal that criticism comes and we have all had our share – the players have had their share, the manager has had their share, people in the club have had their share. That is how things work nowadays if you don’t win the league.”
Alonso’s comments
Remarks made by former Liverpool star Alonso regarding a Premier League comeback have emerged again amid his connections to the Chelsea position.
The Champions League-winning legend, who represented Liverpool from 2005 to 2009, allegedly appears on the Blues’ wishlist for a new permanent boss, after Liam Rosenior’s sacking in April.
Chelsea are understood to have begun talks with the Spaniard’s camp and, according to The Athletic, the 44-year-old is enthusiastic about assuming control at Stamford Bridge.
His previous comments indicate he is prepared for the demands of coaching in England. The remarks will undoubtedly excite those Liverpool supporters who cling to hopes that the Spaniard will reject the Blues in favour of the Reds – should Slot lose his position this summer.
In April 2024, while still in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso responded to rumours connecting him with the Premier League by saying: “You never know. At the moment, I have enough on my plate to think about, but I’m still young as a coach, and for sure it’s a nice thought.”
Alonso assumed the Real Madrid role last summer but vacated his post in the Spanish capital after less than eight months at the helm.
During his stint in Germany he claimed the Bundesliga and German Cup with Leverkusen against the odds, enhancing his standing as a promising young manager.
