A nuclear-armed US submarine, believed to be USS Alaska, docked at a British naval base in Gibraltar on May 10. War expert Professor Anthony Glees told the Daily Star the UK is ‘at risk’
Donald Trump’s plan to threaten Iran with a nuclear sub is “putting the UK at risk”, a renowned war expert has warned. The ballistic missile submarine, believed to be USS Alaska, reportedly docked at Gibraltar on May 10.
Prof Anthony Glees told the Daily Star the movement of the nuclear-armed military vessel is Trump trying to “intimidate” the Iranian leadership. He said: “I do believe this puts Britain at risk. It is meant to put Iran at risk but I don’t think it will…
“The USA has 71 subs, all nuclear powered but not all nuclear armed, so the choice of the USS Alaska is really key to what Trump and Hegseth are doing right now.”
The University of Buckingham expert added: “In a word, they are seeking, by raising the prospect of nuking Iran, to intimidate the IRGCs and all remaining ayatollahs, into making that illusive deal with Trump which will allow him to what he wants to do more than anything else right now: end his stupid and failed war with Israel against Iran.
“It’s a cut-throat threat to the IRGC and all remaining ayatollahs, a ‘horse’s head’ on the pillow of the Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei otherwise known as ‘the invisible man’.”
Despite the heavy duty military capabilities of the submarine, Prof Glees is far from convinced Trump’s posturing will help his cause. He said: “Will it work? Absolutely not. No one with half a brain (so including Trump and Hegseth) think the USA is going to nuke Iran any more than anyone thinks Iran is going to try to nuke the USA.”
It comes as China has given President Donald Trump a fresh nickname in advance of his significant meeting with Xi Jinping. The Chinese term “Chuan Jianguo” has been spreading rapidly across Chinese social media networks.
The expression translates literally as “Trump the Country Builder”. According to social media users, it bears a mocking tone, sarcastically implying that the US president’s aggressive foreign policy has inadvertently strengthened Beijing’s position compared to Washington on the global stage.
Despite the online ridicule, the hashtag #WelcomeTrumpToChina topped trending subjects on China’s Weibo social media site as Trump and his entourage arrived on Wednesday. The President’s plane touched down in Beijing earlier this week, where he was given a ceremonial welcome before beginning a crucial visit. Reports indicate the journey has sparked divided responses among the Chinese public.
