Moment pensioner crashes car into indoor public swimming pool

An elderly driver crashed her car into an indoor public swimming pool and left a woman swimming for her life.

Dramatic footage captured the moment the vehicle smashed through a glass wall and plunged into a basement swimming pool at a bustling sports centre. It dropped approximately 16ft (5m) into the water. Alert swimmers swiftly rescued the trapped driver from the submerged vehicle.

The 74-year-old woman drove into the public pool at the Hanam Sports Centre in Miryang, South Korea, on Saturday (May 16). The driver, a member of the centre’s swimming club, was preparing to depart after a swim. One person was taken to hospital.

According to the police, she accidentally put the car in reverse, hit another vehicle in the car park, and then sped forward.

The car then mounted a small curb, shattered the large glass wall, and plummeted almost vertically into the water.

Upon impact, the car flipped over, landing on its roof and becoming fully submerged. About eight to 10 people were in the pool at the time, but the car landed away from them.

They quickly realised that the driver was trapped inside the vehicle and sprang into action.

One witness told local media: “Swimmers pulled the driver out of the submerged car, and an instructor performed CPR.”

Emergency services rushed the conscious woman to hospital after she reported experiencing severe chest pains.

A female swimmer in her 50s was also hospitalised after suffering minor cuts from the broken glass, as reported by http://creatorzine.com.

A police spokesperson verified that the driver was not intoxicated, possessed a valid licence, and informed officers she “does not remember anything about the incident”.

Detectives are persisting in their review of CCTV footage and have highlighted the lack of sturdy barriers between the car park and the glass wall.
