Casemiro is reportedly closing in on a transfer to play alongside his greatest rival after it was confirmed he would leave Manchester United at the end of the season.

The legendary midfielder, 34, has been enjoying his farewell tour at United since the start of the year, when it was announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season when his contract expires despite showing arguably his best form in a red shirt.

Casemiro joined United in 2022 in a £70million deal from Real Madrid and became a fan favourite of the Stretford End faithful who gave him an emotional send off before, during and after his final match at Old Trafford for United. However, it appears the Nottingham Forest win could have been his final at the Theatre of Dreams entirely.

According to reporter Ben Jacobs, Inter Miami are closing in on a deal to sign Casemiro. The Brazilian is said to have indicated he wants to join and verbal terms are almost finalised.

Miami are optimistic they can pull off the signing of the iconic midfielder while staying within the MLS’ financial rules having reported beaten the likes of LA Galaxy to his signature.

Casemiro is therefore set to line up alongside the man who he called his greatest rival, Lionel Messi. The two were fierce rivals during their respective days at Real Madrid and Barcelona but they could soon become team-mates.

The midfielder previously called Messi his toughest opponent he faced, saying: “It is impossible to miss Messi! I also tell you: his absence is noticeable, everything he represented for Barcelona is noticeable. He is a player that everyone who sees him falls in love with. If you love football, you love Messi. He is among the three best in history.”

Messi joined Miami in 2023 after leaving PSG and reunited with his former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

However, only the former still remains at the club, while Argentina team-mate Rodrigo De Paul was signed from Atletico Madrid. Miami are currently 2nd in the MLS Eastern Conference and won the MLS Cup last year.

Meanwhile, Casemiro could still feature one more time for United on the final day of the season against Brighton. But it remains to be seen whether he will play in a dead rubber game for United with a third place finish already secured.
